Central park day 6
29/08/08 21:57
The last day in New York and a last run around Central Park. Have really enjoyed the runs here and today no exception. The weather has been particularly fine, not too hot or humid, especially in the early morning. Again it felt rather good to be one of the faster runners doing the circuit, it doesn’t often happen.
The sheer variety of people walking, running, cycling, walking dogs and the like made for an endlessly fascinating time. The only problem with being in New York has been the frantic pace at which everything has happened. It certainly has not been a relaxing holiday, but one of the most stimulating we’ve had for a long time.

Central Park day 4

Just about holding out. Exhausted but thrilled with our experiences so far.
Decided to run around Central Park, literally using the footpath encircling the park. Again about 6.5 miles total. A very different experience as fewer joggers, more purposeful walkers. Also a fairly strong smell of urine.
What was truly amazing were the buildings lining the park. The Dakota building where John Lennon used to live, the Museum of Natural History, Metropolitan museum of art, the Guggenheim museum, and so on. The scale of the buildings is so awesome. We are likely to have neck problems by the time we return to the UK.
One strange observation are the ‘power walkers’ they are people walking with very exaggerated arm gestures, almost like cross country skiers. I suppose it is a bit more of a workout.
Have not notice that many birds apart from pigeons, but lots of tree rats or grey squirrels.

Central Park day 3

We certainly didn’t waste time in getting to know New York. As well as the running we must have walked a good 6 miles exploring the downtown and starting to experience some of the New York sights. A trip on the Staten Island Ferry, a visit to ground zero and a very moving visit to St Paul’s church, the Woolworth’s building, Chinatown and little Italy just for starters. Another busy day the next including the Empire State and Time Square.
This morning decided to have another run around Central Park, but stuck to the circular road the whole way. Around 7 miles again. Most of the time was passing people jogging along easily and surprising them by saying hello. It was probably quite scary for them!

New York Central Park

Well the next run wasn’t the usual boring stuff from around Bishop Auckland. This is holiday time, and this holiday is in New York.
Arrived last night at JFK airport at around 9pm local time but by the time we had traversed the truly awful experience that is USA immigration we didn’t arrive in the hotel until midnight. We had actually walked the 7 or so blocks from Grand Central Station to our hotel, what better way to get a feel of New York.
So this morning, waking bright and very early decided to run in the famous central park.
It was around 1/2 a mile from the hotel and being a Saturday morning not too busy.
The GPS watch took a long time to pick up a signal with all the skyscrapers around and I didn’t really know where to go, but headed off along a likely looking track.
What an amazing place! In the middle of one of the world’s great cities, and yet you could be in a park anywhere. Ran past the zoo but eventually landed up on the main park road.
By now the place was full of joggers, and a full blown cycle race. It was just an amazing experience to savour. Eventually ended up running about 7 miles on quite a hilly circuit, but felt much better for it.
